Magnetic susceptibility () variations along the Planosol OK are shown in Fig.4.4.5a. It is characterized by lower values in the upper part of the profile (eluvial and illuvial horizons) and a relative enhancement in the C horizons. On the other hand, the high-field susceptibility (hf) exhibits very different behavior showing a minimum in the E horizons and a sharp increase in the illuvial horizons (Fig.4.4.5b), coherent with the clay content variations (Fig.4.3.1). Thus, the hf reflects the changes in the content of the paramagnetic Fe-rich clay minerals in the illuvial horizons (Bt1 and Bt2) of the profile. The ferrimagnetic susceptibility calculated as a difference between the low-field susceptibility () and the high-field susceptibility (hf) (Fig.4.4.5a) again suggests a relative depletion in the strongly magnetic minerals in the upper soil part, compared with the parent material. The obtained values are very low in the upper soil horizons (10108m3/kg) and about twice as high in the C horizon. Nevertheless, frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility (fd) and the percent frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility (fd%) show well-constrained depth variations (Fig.4.4.5c and d) with two maximaa weaker one in the eluvial horizon E1 and a more pronounced one in the C1 horizon. The high values of fd% (810%) obtained at the depth of the observed maxima reveal an important contribution of the nano-sized strong ferrimagnetic particles in the magnetic signal of the OK Planosol. Concerning the absolute amount of this SP fraction as revealed by the fd (Fig.4.4.5c), it appears that it is more abundant in the deeper part of the profile. The parent material of the profile is loamy-sandy re-deposited material from weathered granites (see the profile description earlier). Thus, one possible hypothesis is that the enhanced magnetism registered in the C horizons is due to strongly magnetic lithogenic iron oxides. However, a problem appears as how to explain the high concentration of the SP fraction in such deposits formed by weathered granite, because usually granites contain coarse magnetite/titanomagnetite grains (e.g., Henry etal., 2012). In addition to the SP fraction, the variations in the SD grain-sizesensitive anhysteretic remanence (ARM) shows enhanced values at the bottom of the OK profile (Fig.4.4.5c)
